Associate Professor at University of Parma
Optiklab Researcher and main maintainer of Optilux.
Curriculum Vitae
Paolo Serena is an associate professor in Telecommunications at the Department of Information Engineering at the Universita’ di Parma, Parma, Italy .
He received the Laurea degree in Electronics Engineering from the Universita’ di Parma, Parma, Italy , in 1999, and the P.h.D. degree in Information Technology from the same University in 2003.
Dr. Serena collaborates with Nokia Bell Labs, Villarceaux – Paris, France, within a research project on the system impact of nonlinear distortions in optical fibers. He is also a member of the Quantum Information Science group at the University of Parma.
During 2004-2009 he was the instructor of the course Comunicazioni Ottiche B (Advanced Optical Communications) focused on nonlinear propagation in optical fibers and its implications on system performance. From 2006 to 2009 he was the instructor of Comunicazioni Elettriche A(Electrical Communications A). From 2011 Paolo Serena is intructor of the course Optical Communications for the Master in Communication Engineering.
His main research activities cover several topics in signal propagation in optical fibers, including the nonlinear interaction of noise and signal through parametric processes, the impact of modulation formats on system performance, polarization mode dispersion, and optimized dispersion management.
Paolo Serena is the creator and first maintainer of Optilux, an open source Matlab/Octave toolbox for simulating optical communication systems.
Paolo Serena is currently a member of the technical committee of Fotonica. He was also a member of the technical committee of the Asia Communications and Photonics Conference 2015.
